The Chef

Chef Thierry Clement brings a wealth of experience to his craft. His career in San Francisco includes three years at Le Charm, a beloved local bistro; one year at Elizabeth Daniel, a 2001 James Beard Award-nominated restaurant; and three years as chef de cuisine at Fringale, a celebrated Basque-inspired spot. In March 2008, he opened his own restaurant, L’Ardoise Bistro, in the heart of the quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhood of Duboce Triangle—right along the charming stretch of Noe Street. The bistro has earned a spot in the Michelin Guide and consistently strong ratings on Zagat, Yelp, and other platforms, along with praise in local publications.

Born in the French Alps, Chef Clement grew up in central France, where he worked at his father’s butcher shop. There, he developed a deep appreciation for fresh, simple ingredients—rooted in the region’s artisan products and his mother’s heartfelt home cooking.

He began honing his skills in professional kitchens at age 15, training in restaurants across Bordeaux, the Pyrénées, and Paris. During six formative years in Paris, he worked at notable venues including the classic Bistro du Peintre in the Bastille district; La Cigale, a charming spot renowned for its soufflés; L’Escargot Montorgueil; and La Cantine des Gourmets, a Michelin-starred restaurant. Before relocating to the United States, he served briefly as executive chef at Fitzer’s in Temple Bar, Ireland.
